Mayweather Outpoints Marquez

Floyd Mayweather Jnr won a unanimous points decision over Juan Manuel Marquez in a catchweight contest in Las Vegas. Mayweather was at his best and showed an excellent defence, with Marquez lacking the size or speed to catch up with Floyd.

Mayweather scored a knockdown in the 2nd round and from then on it seemed unlikely that Marquez would win. However, Marquez put in a spirited performance, always going forward, but finding it very difficult to catch Floyd cleanly with punches.

Floyd was much bigger so with having the size advantage as well as the advantage in speed it was very much an uphill struggle for Marquez. Juan seemed slower carrying the extra weight and he was more fleshy around the midriff than he has ever been before, yet still significantly outweighed by a Mayweather in tip top condition.

The fight never really caught fire, with Mayweather showing excellent defensive skills and then catching Marquez now and again with a single shot or 2 punch combination.

Mayweather may now fight the winner of Pacqaoui v Cotto or Shane Mosley, who challenged Floyd during the post-fight interviews.
