Mayweather v Mosley Preview

On May 1st Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley clash in what is the most highly anticipated fight of 2010 so far. It's a fight that has been a long time in the making and one which is only happening due to negotiations between the Mayweather and Pacquaio camps falling apart.

It's a great match-up and is surely one of the most competitive fights out there for Floyd. It has been argued that Floyd has not really faced many genuine welterweights and has recently been fighting smaller men but in Shane Mosley he will be fighting somebody who probably has the edge in natural size and strength.

However, defensive brilliance and speed are Floyd's key attributes and will Shane Mosley at 38 years of age be able to catch up with Floyd and break through his guard?

Whilst Shane looked excellent breaking down and stopping Margarito in 9 rounds Floyd will be altogether more difficult to catch with punches. Also, Mosley was looking very old to me in his fight with Mayorga and if he had not pulled out the punches in the final round he may have lost that fight on points. He did pull out the punches though and that's why you can't rule out Shane Mosley. He's very tough, he has skills and speed and he is a real competitor.

Shane can't have long left in boxing now though and unusually for him he's likely to be the slower man in the ring. Mayweather's elusiveness and ring intelligence make you think that logically Floyd should comfortably win this fight on points.

Yet if Mosley can impose himself early, throw crisp combinations off an effective jab and apply constant high pressure then you can see this fight being competitive and Floyd being out of his comfort zone. It would be great to see how Floyd copes in a rough, tough fight - let's hope that's what we get!
