Witter Retires in 8th

Bradford's Junior "The Hitter" Witter failed to leave his stool for the start of the 9th round as he was defeated by Devon Alexander for the vacant WBC Light Welterweight title.

Alexander catches Witter flush

Alexander catches Witter with a big shot.

Witter never hit top gear against a top quality opponent who applied constant and effective pressure. Witter was caught by several hard shots and dazed on a number of occasions.

Witter, however, did have some success, jabbed effectively at times and landed a few good punches.

Although Witter was behing on points it came as a surprise when he failed to come out for the 9th round. It appeared that he still had a chence to win. However, he cited an injured elbow which prevented him from properly using his right arm from the 4th round onwards.

Witter can now wave goodbye to a potentially lucrative showdown with Amir Khan - for now anyway.
